The Apothecary by Josef Haydn

Join us in the beautiful surroundings of the Dorchester Manor House garden to enjoy this 1768 comic opera with a libretto by Carlo Goldoni (author of Servant of Two Masters) presented by Bampton Classical Opera, finalist in the 2020 and 2023 International Opera Awards.

Sempronio, a middle-aged, work-shy apothecary, is determined to marry his delectable ward Grilletta, chiefly on account of her inheritance.   But, with two rivals, Mengone his apprentice and Volpino a nobleman, will he succeed?

The opera is in three Acts, lasts 75 minutes and is accompanied by an orchestra conducted by rising star Mark Austin.

This event will be moved to Dorchester Abbey if wet.

If you have tickets for the performance you are welcome to picnic by the river from 2pm
